This is Natasha's description of the making of the Ukranian style eggs she made for the Lean-to Auction in May of 2021.
The goose eggs were found in Keyser Lake. When you create a Ukrainian egg, you work on a raw egg so it will sink into the dye. All steps are done while the raw egg is inside the shell. Removing the insides of the egg is usually the very last step in making a Ukrainian egg. Since I did not know the state of development inside the egg, I had to remove the insides of the egg first. I removed the insides of the egg over a storm sewer outdoors since the egg could have smelled very bad. I knew nothing could be alive inside the eggs since the eggs were found in the lake. First, wax lines are put on the eggs anywhere we want the final design to be white. Then they go into the yellow dye bath. Next wax lines are put on anywhere we want the final design to be yellow, then into the green bath. More wax, then orange, more wax, then red, more wax. The final dye bath is blue. Now the eggs go into the oven to melt away the wax lines. Then the eggs are varnished. |
